Beauty Is…

What is beauty?

Pardon me as I embrace my Greek ancestry and say that I believe this heritage qualifies me, above all others, to discuss this controversial subject.

Let’s start our discussion with a basic definition-

Beauty:
1.a combination of qualities, such as shape, color, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially the sight.

What does that mean?

The ancient Greeks (my people) philosophized and argued, and really beat this subject into the ground, and yet we still consider the idea fascinating.

Plato’s idea of beauty has been paraphrased with “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” (A subjective opinion)
vs Aristotle who argued that beauty is virtue. (A judgmental objective)

The Pythagorean schools saw a correlation between beauty and mathematics. (Another example boys and girls of why math is important. You will need it when the time comes to choose a mate, so stay in school, and focus on math.) This is the idea that makes the most sense to me. While styles have changed over time, the basic premise of the ideal remains the same- symmetry and proportion.

The human brain unconsciously gravitates toward symmetry and proportion. These qualities are desirable when seeking a mate because they exude the idea of health, which is exigent to the subconscious desire to procreate in order to protect the human species. Symmetry implies health and fertility.

In conclusion, beauty is:

a nose with two nostrils, set between the eyes, but slightly lower, IMG_4755.PNG

two arms of equal length attached at the shoulders,

two legs protruding from approximately the same location on each side of the lower torso…

an upper torso

The details, such as: size, shape and color are a matter of personal preference, and in that, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Absolute Beauty
We’ve all heard that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Do you agree? is all beauty contingent on a subjective point of view?

  1. Stopped by to say thank you so much for following my blog. I’ll be checking out more of your blog in a bit. I like how you expressed this. Plato vs Aristotle. Subjective vs judgmental.
