There once was once a sad little ten year old girl
Who dreamt about what she’d do out in the world
Her choices were clearly not those of her brother
As a boy—he had prospects unlike the other
That was her fathers thinking back then
She knew he was wrong so she waited for when
Her future was hers, she couldn’t wait to see
What it would hold— what would she grow up to be
Thoughts of the only choices she had
Were scribed in her diary, it was rather sad:
“Barbie dates Ken~ meh, not for me.
Midge a third wheel~ well…possibly
Skipper—too young to be out on her own…”
A future as a Mattel doll was in fact overblown.
Even with the dog and the car and the boat
The fancy wardrobe with jewels on her throat
The house and the horse and the roller skates
A handsome boyfriend to take her on dates
To be happy she required limitless choices
Not just in accessories or puppeteer voices
She needed to know what girls know today:
Doctor, pilot, archeologist… it could be you someday.
