Catalyst Coin

“Life is a long preparation for something that never happens.” ~ W.B. Yeats

Hopeful thoughts fill the head tipped back to look up

Seeing blue skies, sunshine, a completely full cup

Reach for tree tops, plan to climb a mountain

Make a wish on a coin, toss it in the fountain

That coin was the catalyst, that had you look down

Your first disappointment– what you’d stepped in was brown

A patch of thin ice cracks you almost fall in

Tree roots trip you up, severely bruising your shin

You prepare to achieve all you want and expect

Knowing the odds of living that life are suspect

Me, I thought hope— like air, keeps us alive

Disappointment, I know well, yet still I survive
