I have been exercising my freedom of speech for about two and a half years now. Not many people have taken note of my little blog. During my time as a blogger I’ve made some mistakes, some out of exhaustion, some out of ignorance. Commas specifically are a problem.
I am a single working parent. I have worked the equivalent of two jobs for the past sixteen years to pay my bills. I have liberal leanings. Because I am an artistic soul, I see every injustice…and I feel compassion for those on the receiving end. I have been on the receiving end. I live my life and try to understand everyone, and I try to laugh. Laughing is what we all have in common.
If you’ve read my recent posts you know what my opinions are on current events. Those are my opinions, and by the way they are the opinions of the majority of Americans. I allow you to have your opinions as well, and I will keep mine. I do keep an open ear and listen to both sides before forming my opinions. That’s my background.
Early yesterday I was perusing the internet looking for the most recent popular vote count in this election from Hell…because I know the numbers will continue to change through mid-December as mail in ballots are still being counted. What I found instead was a WordPress blog post that falsely claimed “Donald Trump won both the popular and the electoral votes.” This particular post had obviously been getting lots of hits because it came up first on my search. I visited the blog and it was full of misinformation presented with a venomous bite. I thought about commenting, but it would have been pointless to engage the person and get caught up in an argument.
Instead I wrote my own post with the truth about the ballot count. I also attached a link for readers to sign a petition urging the members of the electoral college to consider their votes. I used a similar title as the hate post, and I got more hits than I’m sure I will ever get again…in fact the number of hits on that post has picked up momentum.
Along with hits comes hate. I expected it. Mostly men, but a few women have attacked me as well. How can I say what I said “on a public forum” – Now my little blog is a public forum. “This is not a democracy!!!” “The election is over!!! Trump won!!! Get over it!!!!” “Go back to school!” “You don’t know what you’re talking about!!!” (Somebody call the exclamation police.) “truly stupid“—There are more personal insults, but I won’t dignify them. There were also slurs against President Obama, so I am in excellent company.
These comments border on bullying, but I have the ultimate power in this “public forum” to ignore the attacks…and I am. I am also flattered to have gotten a rise out of people. Their hope I’m sure is that I will delete my post, and never write another word. That isn’t going to happen.
To quote Eleanor Roosevelt and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights(1949). Article 19:
“Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; yet not every one receives it. This right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.” It goes on to say: “everyone shall have the right to freedom of expression; this right shall include freedom to seek, receive and impart information and ideas of all kinds, regardless of frontiers, either orally, in writing or in print, in the form of art, or through any other media of his choice”.
The exceptions of course are slander, pornography, perjury, and the like.
My blog is not a political blog, although it has appeared to be one of late. My blog is me exercising my freedom of expression through writing. Last time I checked that right has not been repealed.
You dear readers have rights as well. Don’t read my posts would be one. Better still—write your own posts on your own “public forum.”
