Devin Nunes Should Resign

GOP intelligence chairman Devin Nunes, a republican, who has been tasked with leading the independent investigation into possible ties and collusion between Trump and his people with Russia, committed an egregious offense when he briefed Trump on findings.

He held 2 news conferences on Wednesday, claiming there was compelling evidence that Trump was correct in his assertion that former president Obama had spied on him, saying the intelligence community had and “incidentally collected information” on Trump and his transition team in November December and January. “I have seen intelligence reports that clearly show the president elect and his team were at least monitored and disseminated out.”

It turns out the information he received may have pertained to two Russian mobsters who resided in Trump Tower and while under investigation spoke of Trump while being surveilled.

In his own defense Nunes said: “I had a duty and obligation to tell him because as you know he’s been taking a lot of heat in the news media.”

Excuse me? Again, this is the man in charge of an independent investigation. Clearly his allegiance lies with Trump, and not with the investigation seeking to protect interests of the United States from a hostile foreign government.
Even republican senator from Arizona John McCain stated on Wednesday that Congress no longer has the “credibility to handle this alone.”

Nunes has since backtracked on the surveillance statement, saying “That didn’t happen.” He has also apologized to members of the committee for going to the White House without consulting them first.

On March 24, Nunes cancelled an open Intelligence Committee hearing with Clapper, Brennan and Yates, ending public access to hearing information.

With a republican majority in congress, and with Trump’s people situated in various leadership positions of power, it seems absurd to expect a fair investigation by politicians whose personal agendas would benefit from putting an end to the investigation. Devin Nunes must resign from his position with the committee, or be removed.
